Those Behind Monstrous Masks
A downloadable game
Those Behind Monstrous Masks is a collection of random tables to quickly generate a plot for a story in which a team of young amateur sleuths investigate a haunting that turns out to be a hoax, like in Scooby Doo.
All tables use only a d6, a d20, or both and the results are unrelated to any statistics or gameplay mechanics so they should work with any game systems. It is designed to accompany the tables in Small Towns With Paranormal Problems and Big Cities With Bad Vibes.
Tables include inspirations for:
- The brief description of a haunted location.
- The name of a Phantom or Monster that is haunting that location.
- The description of the suspicious people who have been spotted around the location.
- The motivation for the culprit who has been perpetrating the hoax and the method they used to do it.
And more. 10 pages in total.
An example of using these tables to set up a plot:
Rolling on Haunted Location tables: It's a haunted hotel in an economically vibrant region.
Rolling on Phantom tables: It's haunted by the Phantom Skier.
Rolling on Suspicious Person tables: The culprit is a reporter who claims to have not even heard about the haunting.
Rolling on Rational Explanation tables: They based their hoax on already-existing legends from the area and faked it by projecting images and a cleverly-hidden speaker system.
Rolling on Motive tables: Their motive is that they are trying to scare people away so they can find a hidden stash of valuable old comics.
We combine all that to say that the setting is a hotel and ski resort. The reporter had recently interviewed an elderly comics artist who used to live on that mountain and they mentioned that they had left a sizable collection of Golden Age comics in the area. The reporter had also heard of a legend in the area of a skier who died decades ago, so they set up their light projector thing to make an image of a ghostly figure skiing that they can shine onto the slopes to chase people away while they made their search.
